Estate and Gift Tax Valuation: Advanced Issues, IRS Challenges, and Planning Considerations | Live CLE Tax Law Webinar

Broadcast Date: Tuesday, February 2, 2027 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (ET)

Estate and gift tax valuation can present complex legal and evidentiary issues for attorneys advising individuals, estates, trusts, and closely held businesses. Questions involving valuation methodology, discounts, asset characterization, and the substantiation of reported values can create significant exposure to IRS challenges, particularly when substantial assets or closely held interests are involved. This session provides a legal framework for evaluating valuation issues and addressing disputes that may arise in estate and gift tax matters.

In this CLE webinar, Shannon Smith, Partner, and Hei Chan, Associate, both of Charles Russell Speechlys, will examine advanced valuation issues involving closely held business interests, minority interests, lack-of-marketability discounts, and other assets subject to estate and gift taxation. The program will address the legal and evidentiary considerations involved in supporting reported valuations, responding to IRS examinations and proposed adjustments, and evaluating potential disputes. Attorneys will also explore strategies for advising clients on valuation-related planning, compliance, and dispute resolution while identifying issues that may increase federal estate or gift tax exposure.

Upon completion of this program, attorneys will be able to:

  • Advanced valuation methodologies for estate and gift tax purposes, including the valuation of closely held business interests and other complex assets.
  • Legal considerations surrounding minority-interest and lack-of-marketability discounts and challenges to reported valuations.
  • Strategies for substantiating valuation positions and addressing IRS scrutiny, examinations, and proposed adjustments.
  • Methods for identifying and addressing valuation risks and potential estate and gift tax exposure.
  • Considerations for advising clients on valuation-related planning and compliance issues.
  • Strategies for addressing valuation disputes through IRS administrative procedures, settlement, and litigation.
