Law Beyond Earth: Legal and Ethical Issues in Lunar Resource Utilization and Governance | Live CLE Environmental & Energy Law Webinar

Broadcast Date: Monday, December 15, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (ET) | On-Demand Available 24 Hours Later

As space activities move beyond Earth orbit, the Moon is emerging as the next frontier for exploration, commerce, and even settlement. This program provides a rapid overview of the developing field of lunar governance and space resource utilization (SRU). Mentioned topics include the international legal framework under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty; national SRU laws in the United States and other jurisdictions (hints); and the role of the Artemis Accords in shaping emerging norms. The session also touches on ethical and regulatory challenges, such as licensing and mission authorization under the FAA, FCC, and the evolving framework introduced by President Trump’s Executive Order 14335 (Aug. 13 2025), which directs the Department of Commerce to establish a process for authorizing novel space activities.

Join our speakers in this CLE environmental & energy law webinar as they highlight the growing responsibilities of lawyers who may soon advise companies and governments engaged in extraterrestrial activities—an area that, while not yet part of most lawyers’ daily practice, is poised to expand significantly. Participants will gain an understanding of how existing principles of international and domestic law are being adapted for activities beyond Earth, and what legal practice in this area could look like in the coming decade.
