Understanding MO CLE Requirements for Attorneys: A Complete Guide

Attorneys practicing in Missouri must maintain their professional knowledge and ethical standards through MO CLE—Missouri’s Continuing Legal Education program. This system ensures that lawyers remain competent, ethical, and up to date with evolving laws and professional practices. For both new and experienced attorneys, understanding MO CLE requirements is essential to maintaining an active license and avoiding compliance issues or penalties.

MO CLE Requirements for Missouri Attorneys
The Missouri Bar’s Continuing Legal Education Department requires all active attorneys to complete 15 hours of MO CLE every year. These hours are designed to enhance professional development and uphold the integrity of the legal profession. The specific sub-requirements include:
• 2 hours of Ethics and Professionalism
• 1 hour of Elimination of Bias
• 12 hours of general credit, which may include substantive law or practice management topics
This structure ensures that MO CLE supports both technical competence and ethical awareness, helping attorneys maintain excellence in legal practice while serving clients effectively.

How to Complete MO CLE Credits
Missouri attorneys can complete their MO CLE requirements through several approved learning formats. Traditional in-person seminars remain a valuable way to gain insights and connect with other professionals, while online and on-demand learning options provide convenience for those balancing heavy workloads.
Approved formats for MO CLE include:
• Live Webinars and Virtual Seminars – Participate in real time with opportunities for discussion.
• On-Demand and Self-Study Programs – Learn at your own pace from anywhere.
• In-Person and Hybrid Programs – Combine live and remote participation for maximum flexibility.
It’s important to ensure that each course is accredited by the Missouri Bar. Only approved programs count toward MO CLE credit, so attorneys should verify accreditation before registering. Missouri allows attorneys to carry over up to 15 hours of excess credit, including 2 hours of ethics, into the next reporting year—providing additional flexibility in meeting requirements.

MO CLE Reporting and Deadlines
Reporting compliance with MO CLE requirements is straightforward but must be done promptly to maintain good standing. Attorneys must complete their required credits by June 30 each year and report compliance by July 31.
The Missouri Bar provides an online MyMCLE portal where attorneys can track, verify, and report their completed hours. Many providers submit attendance records directly to the Missouri Bar, but attorneys should confirm that all MO CLE credits have been accurately reported.
Failure to comply with MO CLE deadlines or requirements may result in late fees, administrative penalties, or suspension from practice. Attorneys are encouraged to maintain records of course completion, including attendance certificates, for at least three years in case of audit or verification.

Value of MO CLE
Beyond compliance, MO CLE offers significant professional value. It enables attorneys to enhance their legal expertise, stay informed about new laws and court decisions, and explore evolving areas of practice.
For example:
• Business lawyers can focus on corporate law, contracts, and regulatory compliance.
• Family law practitioners can study custody, divorce mediation, and support enforcement.
• Trial attorneys can sharpen their courtroom advocacy, negotiation, and evidence skills.
Ethics and professionalism courses offered through MO CLE help reinforce the principles of integrity, fairness, and civility in practice. Additionally, elimination of bias programs promote diversity and inclusion within Missouri’s legal community—strengthening both professional conduct and client representation.
By actively participating in MO CLE, attorneys demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and uphold the ethical and professional standards expected within the Missouri Bar.

Conclusion | MO CLE
In conclusion, MO CLE is more than a mandatory requirement—it is an essential part of maintaining professionalism, competence, and integrity in Missouri’s legal community. By completing accredited courses, managing credits responsibly, and meeting annual deadlines, attorneys can remain compliant while continually improving their skills.
Through MO CLE, Missouri attorneys show their dedication to excellence, ethics, and lifelong learning—ensuring that the state’s legal profession continues to uphold the highest standards of service and public trust.
